Woman accused of illegally growing 600 marijuana plants in Maine said she just liked smell

A Chinese national accused of illegally growing marijuana in Norridgewock last month previously told police she liked the smell and that the plants were her babies.

Jiamin Liao, 29, is charged with two felony counts of maintaining a marijuana-involved premise in U.S. District Court of Maine in Bangor. She was arrested Aug. 27.

Police seized roughly 600 marijuana plants and 20 pounds of processed cannabis at two properties Liao owns in Madison and Norridgewock during a March raid. In Norridgewock, Liao was questioned in a Somerset County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle after she was read her Miranda rights, according to court records.

Liao’s charges come during an ongoing crackdown by the federal government on illegal marijuana grow houses across the state. Money from the large-scale illegal grows are connected to Chinese organized crime, a leaked memo from the federal government said in August 2023.

New details about what Liao allegedly told police were revealed in a search warrant application for 38 SIM cards and four thumb drives police found at the Norridgewock home. The warrant was submitted under seal in federal court May 30. Data were extracted in June and the application was unsealed Sept. 12.

During the interview, which was audio recorded, Liao told police she was fixing up the Norridgewock property for herself and kept marijuana in the house that was grown at her Madison property. Her family gave her money to buy both properties, she told police.

Processed marijuana was stored in 1-pound bags in her closet, Liao told police. During the interview she said did not sell the marijuana, but instead kept it in her house because she liked the way it smelled, according to court records.

Liao also described the marijuana plants as “like my babies” during the interview.

The federal government is looking to seize the Norridgewock house through civil forfeiture, a process where the U.S. attorney must prove in court there is a “preponderance of evidence” the property is linked to criminal activity. There are ongoing proceedings against five other similar properties in Maine.

Ukrainian flags have disappeared from all the best people’s churches and front lawns over the past year as interest shifted to the war criminals of Tel Aviv, but now that Vlodymyr has joined the Democrats, look for their return.

Strom: “Volodymyr Zelensky has joined the growing list of foreigners campaigning for Kamala Harris. 

“No doubt the media mavens of the transnational elite will call for immediate impeachment of Harris for her collusion with Zelensky to interfere in our election. 

“Yeah, right. Sure, it's true that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have been funneling uncounted billions into Ukraine and that much of that money has been sucked up by corrupt politicians and their buddies, But this is the right sort of corruption, so nobody in the Establishment is bothered by it at all.”

In his harshest criticism yet of the Republican presidential nominee, the Ukrainian president also described Trump’s running mate JD Vance as “dangerous” and “too radical”.

“His message seems to be that Ukraine must make a sacrifice,” Mr Zelensky said of Mr Vance in an interview with the New Yorker magazine before he flew to the US to present his “Victory Plan” to the White House this week. “But I believe that we have shielded America from total war.”

Mr Vance has been criticised by supporters of Ukraine for pushing a peace deal that consolidates the Kremlin’s control over captured territory.

Mr Zelensky said such a deal would disrespect the sacrifices that Ukrainian soldiers have made, appease Vladimir Putin and encourage other dictators to invade their neighbours.

Mr Zelensky’s intervention in US politics comes with polls showing Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, building a slender lead over Mr Trump ahead of the election in November.

Mr Zelensky began his tour of the US on Sunday with a visit to a weapons factory in Pennsylvania producing 155mm artillery shells to be sent to the frontlines in Ukraine, telling employees that “the democratic world can prevail” because of their work.

He is due to meet Mr Biden in the White House on Thursday to present his “Victory Plan”, which he will also share with Ms Harris and Trump.

Strom: European countries have been quite bold of late in telling American voters what to do and even what we should be allowed to say online. I don't know about you, but every time they attack Trump or demand that I and other Americans shut up, it annoys me more than a little. That's why I believe that Trump should threaten NATO with the US leaving. 

“I have a very pragmatic view of the Ukraine war: if supporting the war helps the US, then we should do it; if it doesn't, then we shouldn't. Ukraine is no longer in danger of being swallowed by Russia, so our war aims to prevent this has been achieved. Russia presents no threat to NATO militarily now, if it ever did in the past decade or two, and the last thing we need is to admit the corrupt country into the alliance. 

“Zelensky is here to propose precisely that, among other things. To which I say NO! The last thing we need is to threaten World War III over Ukrainian borders. We have open borders right here to close. 

“I was a supporter of helping Ukraine when Russia was headed to Kyiv; now, not so much. If they want to fight it, it is Europe's war, although I think it is a stalemate and a waste of lives.”

“The only reason for the U.S. to keep defending Europe is to exercise political power over the countries there--to advance our interests. The opposite is now happening--they are messing with our politics in order to empower their transnational governing elite, and we should want none of that.”

“Populations have not grown,” Steven Amstrup, chief scientist for Polar Bears International, said in an email. “Rather our growing knowledge has shown there may be more bears in these areas than we previously thought.”

Bobcat found near Bangor neighborhood didn’t kill all the missing cats, experts say

Wildlife experts say a bobcat found dead near a Bangor neighborhood where roughly 20 pet cats have gone missing in recent months may have played a role but likely wasn’t solely to blame for the disappearances. 

.Those missing pet cats remain mostly unaccounted for, according to Jennifer Delano, a neighborhood resident who created a map of where they live. Only one has returned home, and neighbors haven’t reported finding the remains of any cats.
