Pete Buttigieg Goes To Bat For Union That’s Shutting Down America’s Ports Over 77% Pay Raise

“The companies need to put forward an offer that’s going to get the workers to the table. And again, such an offering would be absolutely compatible with the companies remaining profitable. We’re talking about an industry that got unbelievable profits,” Buttigieg claimed during an appearance on “The Exchange.” “There was a single year where the shipping sector took $220 billion in profits around the world, and you’ve got these ocean carriers, foreign ownership, but we’ve been engaging them at the global level and at the North American level. They are certainly in a position to be able to include workers to participate in this profitability. They could end this tomorrow.”

That’s bullshit.

Buttigieg, or, at least, his handlers know what the real battle is here, and it’s not wages. Hell, even Jeff Bezo’s liberal rag knows, and that means the politico’s do — but if the American public learns that the reason grocery shelves are bare and prices have soared is because these pampered pets of the Democrats are demanding the elimination of technology, they might get angry, and, God forbid, assign the blame to the ruling party.

DEMOCRACY DIED IN DARKNESS

The Real Reason 47,000 dockworkers Are On Strike

For American workers, this is one of the first great battles against advanced automation.

The union representing the dockworkers — the International Longshoremen’s Association — is demanding higher pay and benefits. There’s also a dispute over where cameras can record workers. But these issues could be settled pretty easily with the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents the major shipping lines and port terminals. Just look at the West Coast dockworkers’ contract deal last year that significantly hiked pay, or the record wage gains that United Auto Workers won last fall. The difficult issue at the heart of this strike is whether machines will displace workers earning up to $39 an hour at the ports.

The dockworkers’ last strike in the 1970s was also over technology. Back then, the shipping industry was beginning to use big containers, because they are much easier to handle than individual boxes. The 44-day strike ended with a substantial pay hike and a guaranteed income for union members, whether they worked or not.

Today, the shipping industry is at the forefront of a second revolution. It is now possible to run a dockyard with almost no humans present. The two key jobs — operating cranes and moving containers around — can be automated. Cranes pick up the heavy containers from the ships and sort them on shore. Then trucks carry the containers from the dock to wherever they need to go next — a railroad or trucking hub or storage facility. People are needed to oversee things, but their role is now more akin to air traffic control. Maintenance and IT jobs also remain. But the bottom line is: Fewer workers are needed.

.… In this country, three terminals (in Los Angeles and Long Beach) are considered fully automated. Another three (one in New Jersey/New York and two in Virginia) are classified as semi-automated, meaning that machines do some of the sorting. A 2022 study by the Economic Roundtable of Los Angeles found that 572 jobs a year were lost (about 5 percent of the workforce) after automation in California. The study was funded by the West Coast dockworkers union.

The fact is, container ships are getting bigger and bringing more cargo. Ports that want to operate 24 hours a day to attract larger ships are likely to automate. (It’s easier to schedule machines 24/7 than humans who get overtime.)

…. The East Coast dockworkers understand what’s happening around the world. They know about shipping companies’ hefty profits in recent years. And they know President Joe Biden is unlikely to force them back. … For now, the workers feel emboldened.

This strike will make a difference in what’s available on your local store shelves. But the ramifications are bigger than that. Disputes like this can set a precedent for what happens when machines come for all kinds of jobs.

A Question Too Tough For Kamala

To be fair, pretty much every question is too tough for Kamala. But this one is a real softball:

The horrifying thing about Harris is that, not only is she a far left-winger, she is also hopelessly stupid. I have tried to be charitable and give her the benefit of the doubt, but we have seen it over and over: she is as dumb as Joe Biden is senile. I tremble for our country if she wins the election, which she very well might.

Not mentioned here is that our Border Czar transferred many of our northern patrol agents south to handle paperwork on the southern border

"These are just newcomers we haven't met yet!"

As I note in the headline, there’s a related story:

Pending on North Street

542 North Street, $5.375 million, pending after 15 days. The current owners have Bloomingdalized the interior but to be fair, some of its earlier iterations were no better, and some were worse. The 1919 house itself has always been a fine one, and a series of owners have made the necessary upgrades and maintenance jobs over the years, so the new buyers can makeover its interior to their own taste, and the house’s basic charm will still remain.

'Gender Bias Expert' Accuses JD Vance of 'Mansplaining' at Debate, It Goes Downhill for Her From There

By Sister Toldjah | 1:21 PM on October 02, 2024

Another great moment came when Vance refused to be silenced by the CBS News debate moderators who falsely "fact-checked" him on the Haitian migrant crisis in Springfield, Ohio even though the rules of the debate were that the moderators wouldn't fact check.

"The rules were that you guys weren’t going to fact-check, and since you’re fact-checking me, I think it’s important to say what’s actually going on," Vance told them as he proceeded to make his case. He did so well on it that his mic was cut because we can't have any inconvenient truths slipping out, can we?

It was an important, necessary flag-planting moment in the debate for Vance. But to some so-called "feminists," Vance asserting himself by correcting the two female moderators, Norah O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan, was the definition of "mansplaining."

As Exhibit A, we have Amy Diehl, Ph.D., a self-proclaimed "gender bias expert" who became very fauxfended over Vance's fact check of the moderators.

As Exhibit A, we have Amy Diehl, Ph.D., a self-proclaimed "gender bias expert" who became very fauxfended over Vance's fact check of the moderators. Here's what she wrote on the Twitter/X machine:

"JD Vance talking over the female moderators. We women have all been there. Overtalked by an entitled mansplainer."

Her tweet quickly got ratioed as Twitter users took her to task for the lame (and false) accusation.

Relatedly, there was also MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace, who tried to suggest that Vance standing his ground against the moderators would be a turn off to women.

"I actually think if you're a woman, that might be the worst moment JD Vance had, because he was going to mansplain right over that mute button," she proclaimed. "I think that a lot of women in positions of authority that should command respect just by virtue of that dynamic will see themselves, and some do, the disrespect of them and talked over."

Umm, no. This is such a dumb line of argument that it makes my head hurt. It just sets women and the progress they've made back decades. And all over what? An inability/unwillingness to handle the truth or a different opinion?

It is not "mansplaining" when you correct someone for misleading people and/or stating a falsehood, whether it happened during a heated exchange or not. Vance wouldn't be accused of "mansplaining" had he done that to male moderators and he shouldn't be accused of it because the biased moderators in this case happened to be women.

I mean that's what true "equality" is supposed to mean, right?

The Law of Intended Consequences

403 Stanwich Road was put on the market recently priced at a million dollars, far lower than even a house being sold “as is”, and most likely just a building site should be expected to fetch. Gone in 6 days, it sold yesterday for $1.540 million. Why mess around with lengthy sales efforts when you don’t have to?

As has been noted here before, and said by other agents, it’s very hard to undervalue a property in Greenwich because, demand being so high, the market will bring it up to where it should be.

Greenwich's Peppermint Patty lauds "the new masculinity" of Mr. Kamalla

Oooh, so big and stwong!

The merits of a spouse of a candidate should be as irrelevant as his or her shoe size, but everyone in the leftist media is aswoon over Doug Emhoff, a man who impregnated his daughter’s teacher while he was married, and then forced her to have an abortion. What a guy! A shining example of Modern Man.

And by “everyone”, I include the Old Grey Whore down in NYC:

So, while I continue to believe Emhoff is completely irrelevant to anything related to the current presidential campaign, it will be interesting to see how his media-adorees treat, or bury, this report:

Doug Emhoff Reportedly Slapped Ex-Girlfriend 'So Hard She Spun Around' in Public Altercation in 2012

The Daily Mail released an exclusive report that detailed how the left's ideal man, Doug Emhoff, reportedly slapped his ex-girlfriend across the face so hard that it caused her to spin around after a fit of jealousy, and in a very public place.

According to the Mail, three friends have come forward corroborating the story that back in 2012, Emhoff slapped his then-girlfriend at the Cannes Film Festival in France:

The Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, 59, allegedly struck the woman in the face so hard she spun around, while waiting in a valet line late at night after a May 2012 Cannes Film Festival event in France.

One of her friends told DailyMail.com that the woman called him immediately after the incident, sobbing in her cab, and described the alleged assault.

DailyMail.com is not naming the woman, who is a successful New York attorney, but will refer to her by the pseudonym 'Jane'.

A second friend said Jane, who had been dating Emhoff for three months, also told her about the alleged violence at the time.

A third friend told DailyMail.com that Jane first told her in 2014 that she had dated Emhoff, and recounted the full story of his alleged abuse in 2018, when then senator Harris was in the news after grilling Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a Senate hearing over sexual assault allegations.

The incident went down at around 3am, when the ex-girlfriend was attempting to get a taxi for her and Emhoff. Emhoff flew into a jealous fit when the ex-girlfriend touched the shoulder of one of the valets:

'It was something like 3am. They were trying to get out of there and they both had been drinking. There was a gigantic line for taxis.

'[Jane] went up to one of the valet guys, offered him 100 Euros or whatever, to get to the head of the line. She told me she put her hand on his shoulder. Doug apparently thought that she was flirting, and came over and slapped her in the face:

'She slapped him back.

'My impression is that he had a lot to drink. She was sobbing [on the phone afterwards], but she wasn't slurring her words.

'She told me that she broke up with him that night.'

I gave last night's debate 10 minutes, just to reassure me that Vance wasn't going to implode like Trump did and, reassured, went to bed and left it to others to sum it up. They did:

Uh Huh. Commentators added context, merely by posting this:

Who had the better optics?

And speaking of on the waterfront

90 Oneida Drive (link goes to the former rental listing, but you you’ll get the general idea) has sold for $3.2 million. There’s a house on the property, built in 1928 and expanded a bit since then, but the lot’s been pitched primarily as land, and why not? It’s waterfront, and a buyer can build a 12,000 sq.ft. palace here that will impress his friends and awe his enemies.

This particular sales effort began in 2018 at $3.995, so there’s been a bit of a comedown in expectations, especially because the owner paid $3.5 for the place in 2007. Oh, well, sold now.
