Tanks headed for Ukraine

There are some serious doubts about how Ukraine can establish and operate the complicated logistical supply chain needed to fuel, service, and crew these things, but “tanks for Ukraine” has become various governments’ new virtue signal, the iron and steel equivalent of those Ukrainian flags you see hung over Unitarian church doors alongside rainbow flags.

And, while our politicians may see this escalation as just a feel-good exercise, the Ukrainians seem to envision escalating the war, and recapturing territory ceded to Russia by the Obama administration. They remind me of our own war hawks who, having kicked the Taliban’s ass in 2001, looked around and decided that the next brilliant move was to settle into Afghanistan and transform it into a modern western country; “and oh, while we’re doing that, what’s that big piece of desert over there, Iraq? Heck, we’re already here — saddle up, boys.”

What’s next? The Ukes are already looking ahead:

After celebrating the expected tank donations, some Ukrainian officials called for Western warplanes.

“And now, dear allies, let‘s establish a powerful fighter jet coalition for Ukraine,” Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrij Melnyk wrote on Twitter.
