When signing the original version of the legislation, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “California is committed to ensuring that the men and women who have helped build our world-class economy are able to share in the state’s prosperity. Today’s action gives hardworking fast-food workers a stronger voice and seat at the table to set fair wages and critical health and safety standards across the industry.”

The state Senate passed AB 1228 Thursday. 

Memo to Newsom: unskilled hamburger flippers did not “help build our world-class economy” — the entrepreneurs who built these stores did, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs for workers, manufacturers, farmers, transportation companies, and drivers.

Work hard: these companies promote from within, and managers do very well: In—N—Out managers are paid an average of $160,000 annually. Of course, in five years, those managers will be overseeing robots and order kiosks and the hamburger helpers will be back on welfare, but that’s the point of these laws in the first place.
