Contribute to William Dym's college fund?

William is the Brunswick alumnus and current sophomore at USC who just suffered the horrible loss of his entire family to a double-murder-suicide committed by his own father. A GoFundMe site's been set up to raise money to cover the cost of his education. Ever since you guys were so incredibly generous supporting John, I'm a complete sucker for these campaigns, and am always on the prowl to give something back. This seems like a particularly worthy cause.

Story here.

Down 20% since 2004

62 Hunting Ridge Rd

62 Hunting Ridge Rd

62 Hunting Ridge Road, which sold for $6.650 million in 2004, returns today at $5.395. The current owners even added a pool and a tennis court during their tenure. Sad.

Listing claims that the property is "just ten minuets from schools, shopping and country clubs" — depending how long each of those dances lasts, that could be a short distance or long; it isn't disclosed.

I don't quite know what to make of this story, but it may prompt me to buy a couple of guns on the black market

Virgin Islands Governor activates National Guard ahead of Hurricane Irma, authorizes it to seize private guns and ammunition "if necessary".

Without reading the various federal statutes cited by the Governor in his emergency order granting the National Guard the power to do this, I'll suppose that he really does have this authority, and that it's been on the books for a long time. Either way, with present forecasts of 180 MPH winds headed for the territory, and the history of looting on the islands after previous catastrophes, disarming the law-abiding citizenry strikes me as foolish.

And it is only the law-abiding citizens: those who purchased guns from federally licensed dealers, from whom the authorities will have weapons to seize. The bad guys — and the Virgin Islands have a quite a few of them — will be under the radar.

My guess is that this part of the emergency order will never be acted on but if it is, I'd look for a huge drop in (reported) gun sales as those who wish to protect their homes and families will seek "alternative sources" to buy supplemental, untraceable weapons.

(Almost) all of my various guns have been purchased legally, so state, local, and federal authorities know exactly where they are (a few rare exceptions, also legal, were inherited, or purchased from private individuals back when such purchases were permitted). I'd hate to think that a couple of armed soldiers could appear at my door and leave me defenseless. That sounds wildly paranoid, but these days, who knows?

Has Sherwood Farms' free fall hit bottom?

11 Stillman Lane was listed in 2014 at $5.2 million, and finally sold a year later for $4.1. Last month it came back on $3.995,a nd reports a contract after just 12 days. These are beautifully crafted homes, and their sales in the high-$4s, low-$5s back at the height of the market really weren't eye-popping, but the development has suffered since. This sale may give other home owners hope.

This is a pretty good report on the state of our Greenwich real estate market

Leona's place at 521 Round Hill. $39,990,000, and going nowhere

A reader (I always assume that readers who send along articles wish to remain anonymous, but I'm happy to give credit, so just let me know if I have permission to use your name) offers up this story from Institutional Investors Alpha", "The reckoning on Round Hill Road".

It's set up to block copying excerpts, so if you want to read it, you'll have to follow the link. Basically, nothing you haven't read here before: the days of $1,000,000 annual bonuses for hedge-funders are gone (computers at quant firms get no bonuses at all, and their human operators are averaging $200,000 Christmas presents), the new, young rich coming from the city want neighborhoods, not 15-acre (huge) house on the Prairie living, and Connecticut's punitive taxation of hedge funds, with more draconian rates on the horizon, is driving the funds to greener pastures.

Reporters love looming disaster stories, and when those stories involve the rich, a certain schadenfreude infests their coverage, but in this case, I think the report captures the essence of what's going on here, particularly in our Back Country.

Can dogs say yes? This budding medical scholar says indeed they can.

PETA is uncomfortable with this position, but those spoilsports even hate aquariums, so why listen to them?
