Idiot passenger thrown off cruise ship after taking selfie

The lady was let off at the next stop, where she presumably found alternative transportation home, but in view of the stories I’ve read of selfie-taking-morons falling to their deaths at the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and various other tourists spots with obviously-dangerous precipices and balconies, I was encouraged by the article’s concluding sentence:

According to a recent global study, 259 people have died while taking selfies between 2011 and 2017.

Faster, and more of them: Darwin is growing impatient.

Congress: we prefer not to

The Babylon Bee reports, you decide:

“Situation in Syria is bad, but not so bad that we’ll declare war”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congress slammed President Trump for not doing more about the situation in Syria. They said the situation over there is really bad but quickly clarified that it wasn't bad enough for them to use their constitutional powers to declare war.

The House condemned Trump's withdrawal from Syria, lamenting the fact that there was nothing they could do under the Constitution to send more troops over, like declare war or something.

Republicans and Democrats crossed the aisle in the Senate to slam the withdrawal, saying the grim, tragic situation over there was "devastating" but "not quite devastating enough for us to actually do something about it."

"It's really bad over there and Trump is really evil for not sending more troops and fighting Turkey," said Senator Mitt Romney. "I mean, just to clarify, it's not bad enough for Congress to actually do its job and declare war. But still, it's pretty bad."

"Did I mention Trump is evil?"

I liked it better at its earlier price of $860,000

59 stanwich.jpg

59 Stanwich Road, purchased for $860,000 this past March, has been dolled up and put back up for sale today at $1.395. I’d be wary of trying to flip any house in this market, but if I were tempted to do so, I’d try not to start with a sow’s ear.

In fact, the untpuched home, at $860,000, was a decent house for its price, and would have served a buyer in that range quite well. I’m not sure the same can be said about this new version that’s $535,000 more expensive.

But we’ll see.

55 Perkins Road. I described my view as “skeptical” back when it first hit the market in April at $12.8 million, and continued to express my doubts back in August, when its price remained firmly lodged at that price. Today the owner flinched, a little, and reduced it to $9.950.

Plenty more where that came from.

Two contracts

wildwood.jpg

49 Wildwood Drive, in Milbrook, doesn’t have all that much to offer, but at $1.450 million, it doesn’t need to. Its original 2017 price of $2.395 left the seller with some ‘splaining to do, an embarrassing situation solved by what turned out to be its last price cut.

18 Tait Road

18 Tait Road, in Old Greenwich. New construction, started at $3.590 in December, 2018, and spent much of the next year adjusting that price to meet the market. Turns out, $2.675 was closer to what buyers were willing to pay.

Nice house

wyckham.jpg

15 Wyckham Hill Lane is back on the market after being pulled, unsold at $3.495 in May, 2018. The new price is $2.995 million, which is a pretty good number for this Hobbs built home. I showed it to two discerning, knowledgable clients back in 2018 and though they ultimately decided that it was larger (7,000 sq.ft.) than they needed, they both approved of its construction and design, and their judgment in these matters is far more informed than mine.

The house is set far enough back from the road that there’s no road noise, which can be a problem for some other homes on Wyckham, so that’s a plus. Owners paid $3.3 in 2000, made some substantial improvements and tried for $5.295 in ‘08 — wrong time for that. It’s been back on the market, off-and-on, since 2014, when it started at $4.495. Time has improved its price, but hasn’t, at least when I last saw it, diminished its quality.

Worth seeing.

Still with us

55 winding lane.jpg

55 Winding Lane, which has been for sale since Elizabeth Feake traded for wampum shells down by the sea shore, has cut its price to $3.985 million. It came on the market at $6.495 in 2012 and stayed lodged at that price for years and years, ignoring the furious rejection by the market. Now it’s beginning its descent to reality, and a sale may finally be forthcoming; perhaps next spring.

These owners paid $3.850 for it in 1998, so at least they’re approaching familiar territory.

Quick sale in Riverside

23 crescent.jpg

23 Crescent Road, $2.1 million, has a contract in just 36 days (deduct a week or two for contract negotiations and building inspections, and that 36 days was even less). No surprise here, because it’s a clean house on a good street within easy walking distance of Riverside and Eastern and the train — the trifecta for many younger buyers — and well priced for homes in this range. Interesting to note that this same house failed to find a buyer for a year in 2009-2010, when priced at $2.2 million. Those years were smack in the middle of the trough for Greenwich real estate; Riverside has recovered, but other areas of town have not.
