One flu over the cuckoo's nest

COVID19 seems to be driving our market these past few months as urbanites flee the big city. And luckily for back country sellers, the newcomers seem oblivious to the distance from town some of these homes are. It’s possible that the same people who think “going to the country” means traveling 30 miles from Manhattan aren’t daunted by a 15 minute drive to Greenwich Avenue.

Whatever the explanation, some buyers, finding Riverside and Old Greenwich sold out, are looking to the northwest for sanctuary, and finding it.

Case in point is 20 Greenbriar Lane, asking $3.895 million, which is now pending after 92 days.

It was a different house that sold in December 2017 for $2.3 million, but still, someone made some very nice money here merely by changing a traditional builder’s colonial to the black window look. Even deducting the cost of those windows and transaction fees, a $1.5 mark-up should allow a tidy profit.

Havemeyer contract

21 Marshall.jpg

21 Marshall Street, asking $895,000. Started a year ago May at $980,000. Fairly representative of the original 1946-48 homes in this neighbored, with no central air and dated (1985) kitchen and baths, so if you’re looking for a baseline value for Havemeyer originals, here it is.

The listing promises that the sellers will reseed the lawn, patch the driveway and repair the back deck and steps; judging from the photos, a new roof might also be in this home’s future.

Good question. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

After decades on one-party rule, why are Democrat-run cities all such cesspits of systemic racism?

George Korda:

On social media the other day, in discussions of George Floyd’s death, I saw an increasing number of references from Democrats and Democratic friends about the problem of systemic racism. I wrote the following post, citing only a few municipal examples:

“Below are pertinent questions, given the way the Democratic Party defines itself as being the party of tolerance and inclusion, and many Democrats’ characterizations of Republicans or conservatives as racists or racially insensitive.

“Minneapolis, Minn. has been under Democratic control since 1978. Chicago has been under Democratic control for 89 years; its present mayor is a black woman. Philadelphia has had Democratic mayors for 68 years; three of its last five mayors have been black men. Six of the last seven Atlanta, Ga., mayoral administrations were led by black Democratic mayors, and the present mayor is a black woman.

“A city runs its police department and other services; therefore, if there is so much ‘systemic racism’ in these organizations, why hasn’t it been corrected over so many years under Democratic leaders?

“Why aren’t these cities garden spots of racial tolerance, understanding, and virtue?”

There have been no answers.

The owner of Greenwich Free Press will cause trouble if I use one of her photographs in this blog, so here’s a free link to her site; scroll down to the 12th picture and feast your eyes on Greenwich wokeness in all its glory:

Designer water, $3.50; Roger Vivier running shoes, $875; Betteridge diamond wedding band, $17,500, Hermes silk “mask”, $875; tear in her eye, priceless.

And won’t she have fun when she attends her yoga class today and recounts her brief spell among “the people”.

After letting city burn, Minneapolis Mayor asks Trump for rebuilding money

defund police.jpg

Mayor thinks Trump should send money his way. This is the same mayor who refused to bring in the National Guard to quell those riots, and whose own City Council is pressing to dissolve its police force.

With at least $55 million in estimated damage and far more to come, Minneapolis will need state and federal aid as it attempts to rebuild hundreds of structures after the riots following George Floyd’s death, Mayor Jacob Frey said.

City officials are still putting together a complete tally of the destruction and cautioned that estimates are likely to rise significantly. Gov. Tim Walz and members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation are trying to get government assistance to offset that cost. But in the past, neither the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) nor Congress has consistently sent federal funding to cities ravaged by riots.

Minneapolis is already one of the most dangerous cities in America, so dismantling its police department can only make things worse. That’s the citizens of that city’s concern, of course, so let it burn, but the rest of us should feel no obligation to clean up after them.In fact, we should ignore the pleas that will surely come from all the cities now pledging to dissolve their police departments and ban the use of tear gas (cities that have been governed exclusively by Democrat liberals for decades but are suddenly racists cesspits because Trump), like Seattle. Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Philadelphia, and Portland. They asked for it, let them get it, good and hard, but leave us out of it.

In bold anti-Trump statement, Pelosi rips Bible in two

WASHINGTON, D.C.—In a bold, powerful statement to oppose Trump, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi solemnly tore up the Bible after Trump was seen holding one up in front of a church.

At a press conference, the Speaker of the House held up a Bible and then ripped it in two, declaring that she was against anything Trump was associated with.

"If Trump is for the Bible, then I am against it," she said as she struggled to rip the Bible in half. Finally, aides came to intervene, pre-ripping the spine of the Bible so it would be easier for her to tear. ….

In a genius move, Trump then held up a Koran in front of a mosque, forcing Pelosi to tear up a Koran and alienate the left.
