It's not science, it's control

Lockdown madness

John Tierney

NOVEMBER 20, 2020

THE DATA DOESN’T FIT “THE SCIENCE”: Lockdown Addicts. A new — and impressively huge — study of a natural experiment in Sweden shows that closing schools does practically nothing to save lives or stop the spread of Covid. Swedish economists compared Covid infection rates and medical records for all the parents (hundreds of thousands) at senior high schools, which went online during the spring pandemic, against the parents at junior high schools, which stayed open and did not encourage students or teachers wear face masks.

The parents whose children kept going to school were no more likely to be treated or hospitalized for Covid than were the parents of the online students. And the teachers who remained in the classroom had lower rates of infection and hospitalization than did the parents.

A study of this quality ought to be the final word on the subject. But as I write at City Journal, it doesn’t fit “the science” that’s guiding Joe Biden’s Covid advisory board — and the Democratic politicians eager for more lockdowns.

NYT: They championed Venezuela’s revolution. Now they’re its latest victims

The host of a popular radio show, “The People’s Combat,” had always diligently praised Venezuela’s governing Socialist Party, even as millions sank into penury under its rule. But when acute gasoline shortages paralyzed his remote fishing town this summer, he strayed from the party line.

On his show, the host, lifelong Socialist José Carmelo Bislick, accused local party chiefs of siphoning fuel, leaving most people queuing for days outside empty gasoline stations.

Just weeks later, on Aug. 17, four masked, armed men burst into Mr. Bislick’s house and told him he had “run the red light,” before beating him in front of his family and hauling him away into the night. He was found dead with gunshot wounds hours later, dressed in his favorite Che Guevara T-shirt…

His death appears to be part of a wave of repression against leftist activists alienated by President Nicolás Maduro, who seems intent on consolidating power in parliamentary elections in December. The vote, boycotted by the opposition as a sham, could bring what used to be one of Latin America’s most established democracies to the verge of being a one-party state.

To quote Michael Moore on September 11th, “Don’t they know we voted for Gore?”

Partridge Hollow sale

3 Partridge Hollow Road has closed at $3.520 million. 900 days on the market, it started in early 2018 at $5.295.

I understand that everyone’s got to live somewhere, but I’m always a bit surprised when “somewhere” turns out to be here. But people do like the far reaches of town, and that’s what makes Greenwich real estate hum: there’s a neighborhood and house style for almost any suburban taste.

Contract in Rockwood

rockwood.jpg

77 Rockwood Lane, $4.195 million, is reported under contract. A 1951 house that could benefit from some updating, it was listed for $4.6 million in July and dropped to this price October 1. While it’s always a good idea to adjust a price quickly when the market (isn’t) speaking, it’s even more important, I think, to do so now, because the market is hot, and if your price isn’t drawing offers, you’re too high. Don’t blame a dearth of buyers; they’re out there, looking.

Commandant Noisome exempts Hollywood elite from his lockdown decree

Insanity Wrap feels the need to remind you of one very important detail: Hollywood barely produces anything in California anymore.

Chances are, your favorite (or even least-favorite) movie or TV show is filmed somewhere near Vancouver or Toronto, or in Georiga or North Carolina — pretty much anywhere other than a Hollywood studio building.

So it isn’t like Newsom’s favoritism is going to save the jobs of local gaffers, set decorators, or cameramen.

It’s mostly upper-level management who are allowed to go about their business, whatever the hell that might be.

Sale on Boulder Brook

boulder brook.jpg

35 Boulder Brook Road has sold for $1.9 million, 1,187 days after it was listed at $2.995.

The builder/developer bought it out of foreclosure in 2016 for $1.250 rebuilt it, to an extent, and set it back on the waters in 2017 at the aforesaid $2.995 million. That was a dumb price, because the lot remained sub-par, and the construction was mid-level, at best. I’m not wild about even $1.9, but a buyer’s gotta do what a buyer’s gotta do, and these days, in this range, there’s not much choice.

To believe is one thing; where's the proof? I'm back to my original position

There’s a reason they’re already referring to this as the coming “Biden/Harris Administration”. And soon, they’ll drop the “Biden”.

There’s a reason they’re already referring to this as the coming “Biden/Harris Administration”. And soon, they’ll drop the “Biden”.

A week or so ago, I suggested that it was time to Move On™ from the election, but backed off when I saw the media’s attacks on the very idea of challenging an election (no such opposition was lodged against Kerry or Stacey Abrahms), and I figured I’d give Guiliani and his team time to put up or shut up. They’ve done neither. Others have noticed this failure too.

Conservative site Power Line and Tucker Carlson have the same problem I do: lots of allegations of fraud, but no hard evidence proving it. Statistical analysis won’t suffice to overturn the election, and despite two weeks of promises, our side has produced nothing else

.PowerLine:

Tucker Carlson also watched the press conference. He devoted his monologue to it last night. He watched with an open mind and clearly remains sympathetic to the claims of fraud (or “rigging”). FOX News has posted his column adapted from the monologue along with the video here

Carlson:

All of which brings us to the bombshell at the center of today’s press conference that was delivered by Powell, who also serves as Gen. Mike Flynn’s lawyer. For more than a week, Powell has been all over conservative media with the following story: This election was stolen by a collection of international leftists who manipulated vote tabulating software in order to flip millions of votes from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. The other day on television, Powell said of Trump that when the fraud is finally uncovered, “I think we’ll find he had at least 80 million votes.” In other words, rigged software stole about seven million votes in this election.

On Sunday night, “Tucker Carlson Tonight” texted her after watching one of her segments. What Powell was describing would amount to the single greatest crime in American history. Millions of votes stolen in a day, democracy destroyed, the end of our centuries-old system of self-government. Not a small thing.

Now, to be perfectly clear, we did not dismiss any of it. We don’t dismiss anything anymore, particularly when it’s related to technology. We’ve talked to too many Silicon Valley whistleblowers and we’ve seen too much after four years on the air. We literally do UFO segments, not because we’re crazy or even been interested in the subject, but because there is evidence that UFOs are real and everyone lies about it.

There’s evidence that a lot of things that responsible people dismiss out of hand as ridiculous are in fact real. The louder the Yale political science department and the staff of The Atlantic magazine scream “conspiracy theory,” the more interested we tend to be. That’s usually a sign you’re over the target. A lot of people with impressive-sounding credentials in this country are frauds. They have no idea what they’re doing. They’re children posing as authorities. And when they’re caught, they lie and then they blame you for it. We see that every day. It’s the central theme of our show and will continue to be.

So that’s a long way of saying we took Sidney Powell seriously with no intention of fighting with her. We’ve always respected her work, we simply wanted to see the details. How could you not want to see them? So we invited Sidney Powell on the show. We would have given her the whole hour. We would have given her the entire week, actually, and listened quietly the whole time at rapt attention.

But she never sent us any evidence, despite a lot of polite requests. When we kept pressing, she got angry and told us to stop contacting her. When we checked with others around the Trump campaign, people in positions of authority, they also told us Powell had never given them any evidence to prove anything she claimed today at the press conference.

Powell did say that electronic voting is dangerous, and she’s right, but she never demonstrated that a single actual vote was moved illegitimately by software from one candidate to another. Not one.

Better we devote energy to dismantling mail-in voting and all the other avenues for fraud that the Democrats put in place to achieve this theft.

Flush with victory, public schools double-down on indoctrination

You might think these people would declare “Mission Accomplished”, but instead they’ve turned to nailing the final nails in our country’s heritage and future.

Illinois sets new, mandatory “progressive curriculum” standards.

Excerpt:

The culturally responsive teacher and leader will: Understand and value the notion that multiple lived experiences exist, that there is not one “correct” way of doing or understanding something, and that what is seen as “correct” is most often based on our lived experiences … Recognize how their identity (race/ethnicity, national emotional ability, socioeconomic class, religion, etc.) affects their perspectives and beliefs about pedagogy and students.

Illinois is not alone. Last week I posted on Virginia’s curriculum “reform” that will introduce the history of slavery into its kindergarten classes.

“Sugarcoating or ignoring slavery until later grades makes students more upset by or even resistant to true stories about American history,” the curriculum reads.

An article in The Encyclopedia Britannica is illustrative:

Education under communism

The communist revolution aimed at being total revolution, demanding no less than the establishing of a new society radically different from what the orthodox communists called the feudal society of traditional China. This new society called for people with new loyalties, new motivations, and new concepts of individual and group life. Education was recognized as playing a strategic role in achieving this revolution and development. Specifically, education was called upon to produce, on the one hand, zealous revolutionaries ready to rebel against the old society and fight to establish a new order and, at the same time, to bring up a new generation of skilled workers and technical personnel to take up the multitudinous tasks of development and modernization.

Howard Zinn’s communist screed is now the standard history text for America’s high schoolers, the NYTs “1619 Project” is swamping our elementary schools, and college science classes, even engineering schools teach that “there’s no one right answer”, and bridges, say, are to be designed and built in accordance with a student’s “life experiences” and struggles within the systemic racism of Amerikka..

COVID Experts confer and prescribe

COVID Experts confer and prescribe

Following the science, Maine joins other states and imposes a 10:00 PM curfew on restaurants, bars, movie houses and gyms.

Except that there is no science behind these curfews: none. No evidence that even hints that COVID germs come out when the lights grow dim, no evidence that closing early has stopped a single case of flu.

Go ahead. DuckDuck it yourself: “Why 10:00 P.M. Covid curfew?”. You’ll turn up lots of “answers”, all of which amount to, “well, that’s what they’re doing in other countries”, and “COVID is really, really scary, so we want to err on the side of caution”, and, “because we say so”. Not a single study showing a reduction of cases after these curfews, or and increase without.

It’s all Kabuki, and it’s all bullshit. It does, however accelerate the permanent ruin of these establishments. I know that’s the point of the exercise, but I can’t figure out why our politicians are doing it.
