Anti-Asian hate crimes

San Francisco’s newly elected Marxist District attorney Chesa Boudin dropped charges against the younger of this man’s two assailants (who in turn were cheered on by the mob) and enrolled him in a new “restorative justice” program . You want more anti-asian hate crime, this is how you get it.

Upon taking office, Boudin fired his top seven prosecutors and prohibited all his assistant attorneys from requesting cash bail be set for defendants. No word whether that applied to the older of these defendants two months ago when he attacked the same old man and robbed him. i’m guessing it did.

Even if you don’t remember the Reverend Al leading attacks on Korean grocers back in the 80s, or the LA riots when blacks burned down that city’s Korea Town, there are still resources that show what’s happening. Sources ignored by the media, of course, but they’re there.

Overachievers: whites: 62% of the population, 24% of attacks on Asians. Blacks, 12% of the population, 27% of attacks on asians

Father jailed for referring to his transgender teen as his daughter

Dr. Jordan Peterson was vindicated when on March 16, 2021, at 10 a.m., Robert Hoogland surrendered himself to the court in response to a warrant issued for his arrest by the attorney general of British Columbia. His crime? Referring to his teen, a biological female, as “daughter,” referring to her with female pronouns, and refusing to affirm her medical transition to become a trans male.

Hoogland’s story, reported by the Post Millennial, is heartbreaking on many levels. He has consistently advocated for “watchful waiting” for his child. This approach means waiting until a child becomes an adult before he or she undergoes any permanent or irreversible treatment. In his interviews and court appearances, he notes that gender dysphoric children often desist as they mature. A compilation of studies shows that desistance happens frequently, although it is not predictable.

Think this can’t happen in America? Think again.

A parent in Canada has been under a compelled speech order for several years and has been jailed for non-compliance. Washington State has already instituted a law saying 13-year-old children can seek transition treatment without a parent’s consent. Considering the Biden administration’s position on trans issues and this cultural moment, how can we believe this is not possible in America?

California finally allows Disneyland to reopen, but there must be absolute silence on the rides

After being shut down for a year, the omniscient and wise leaders of California are finally allowing theme parks in the state to re-open on April 1. You must not, however, participate in "singing, shouting, heavy breathing and raising one's voice" while on a ride.

"This rule applies when visitors are on the parks' rides, meaning guests are recommended to stay silent on roller coasters that usually encourage people to do anything but," said People. "In addition, face mask requirements and 'modifications to seat loading patterns' are being implemented by the parks to 'mitigate the effects of shouting.'"

Not the Bee’s Joel Abbot’s concluding remarks:

Yes, parks around the nation have been open since last summer, and yes, these same California leaders oversaw the nation's least-scientific COVID response and drove their economy into the ground, but don't question their judgment here!

Can you imagine how creepy it would be to visit a park where there are no sounds of laughter, thrill, or joy??

Workforce zoons to Town

Taos appears to be the destination for a whole different category of newcomers: The Zoom workforce. Realtors across the region confirm that, as other local businesses struggled to stay afloat, the real estate market in Taos was buzzier than a beehive.

Brian Stenum, owner of Casa Encantada Realty and 2021 president of the Taos County Association of Realtors, noted that “the local real estate market saw a significant increase in activity last year with sales higher than in any other year since at least 2014,” with a correlating escalation in tight inventory, home values and pricing.

Through the first two months unit sales of single-family homes–by far the biggest segment of the market–are up 50% over the same period in 2020 (54 vs. 36 closed sales).  Dollar sales are up 94%. Median and average price are up 24% and 29%, respectively.

Unfortunately, in the 20 years since I was there, a great pestilence has descended on the town, probably carried in by this same zoomer wave. it was a great little place back then, and our correspondent says it still is, but i fear for its future

Doctor quits researching COVID because of hostilty over his findings about low risk to children

Jonas Ludvigsson undermined the political argument that schools couldn’t reopen in person with his research findings about COVID-19’s negligible threat to children and minor threat to teachers.

The professor of clinical epidemiology at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute faced such hostility for his findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, that he’s now given up on researching COVID-19, much less debating it.

Ludvigsson’s comments to the Swedish Medical Association were translated from Swedish by The British Medical Journal. He said that he hasn’t been able to sleep more than a few hours for a week as a result of the “angry messages through social media and email” criticizing his study and partly blaming him for Sweden’s contrarian COVID-19 strategy.

His letter to the editor, first published Jan. 6 and listed in the Feb. 18 issue of NEJM, went through several revisions and  “formal external peer review,” including statistically, before it was published, Ludvigsson told the association.

The pediatrician’s research focused on children from age 1 to 16 during the first wave of COVID-19 last spring, tracking admissions to intensive care units March 1-June 30. It included those with “laboratory-verified or clinically verified Covid-19, including patients who were admitted for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children” because it’s “likely” related to COVID-19.

Just 15 children went to the ICU, for a rate of 0.77 per 100,000. Four had “an underlying chronic coexisting condition (cancer in 2, chronic kidney disease in 1, and hematologic disease in 1),” and none died. As for teachers, “fewer than” 10 in preschool and 20 in school went to the ICU during the same period. The schoolteacher ICU rate was about 19 in 100,000.

Relevant to school reopening debates across the globe, Ludvigsson notes that children weren’t wearing face masks. As with the rest of Swedish society, they were simply “encouraged” to practice social distancing.

What’s just as alarming as this suppression of research on COVID is that I’ve read several reports over the past few years about climatologists having their papers rejected by journals and there funding removed if their results question the “settled science” of global warming. Many of those scientists have, like Dr. Ludvigsson, simply quit researching the subject because of the futility of the effort. Their work won’t be published, they are unable to get grants, and if word of what they’re doing gets out, they, also like Dr. Ludvigsson, are savaged.

Quick contract on Will Merry Lane

42 will merry lane.jpg

42 Will Merry was listed at $3.295 million on January 15 and has gone to contract. Tht’’s quite a contrast to its last sale in 2012, when it started at $2.850 and sold for $1.990 434 days later.

This house I on the non-Merritt side of Will Merry, and when I last toured it I found the noise barely perceptible. Quite a nice house even back then, and these owners have obviously spruced it up and refreshed it.

Still, I think its quick sale is an indication of how strong the market is today compared to the 2012 market, which was in the doldrums.
