Speaking of miracles and rising from the dead ... (Updated)

I was curious about when Joan Baez died, so I looked it up this morning and by golly, she’s not only still breathing, but she’s still entertaining the great grandparents of today’s teens.

‘60s Folk Icon Shocks her contemporaries by reemerging at ‘No Kings Day’ March

“Once we explained to the under-70s who she was” nonagenarian protest organizer Elisabeth Schwarzkopf explained, “they were willing to join hands and sing along with her moving rendition of Kumbaya. Well, the first chorus, anyway; I’m afraid she forget the rest of the song, and wandered off stage.” ,

UPDATE:

In a fierce defense of his folk singing idol (although he does describe her as “a woman who remains a dirty commie” – go figure), brother Gideon has demanded that I post a picture of “what she ACTUALLY looks like”. Okay, Gid, but I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. Here’s the picture Wikipedia uses to depict her, an image that Chat AI and I aged just a little to account for a further nine years of deterioration:

It's a miracle!

WHO YOU GONNA BELIEVE, ME, OR YOUR OWN LYING EYES?

A man who told the federal government for years that he was paralyzed walked into court Tuesday for his initial hearing.

Gregory Heimann Jr., 51, of Princeton is charged with making a false statement to the government, specifically the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Heimann — who walked into the courtroom and stood unassisted during the hearing — pleaded not guilty during the hearing in U.S. District Court in Bangor.

His arrest in Missouri on Aug. 21 ended a nearly year and a half stretch of being on the run from federal law enforcement after Heimann allegedly faked his death April 19, 2024, in eastern Maine. A warrant for his arrest was issued 10 days later.

Heimann convinced doctors he was injured during his time in the Army in the 1990s, according to an affidavit filed in support of his arrest. It was a yearslong plot escalating from walking with a cane to saying he was fully paralyzed, according to the affidavit.

Agents from the VA’s Office of Inspector General interviewed Heimann in person but did not arrest him, even after seeing him walk, the affidavit said. A month and a half later, Heimann gathered his belongings in a canoe and traveled to a river near the Canadian border on April 19, 2024, and disappeared.

The Maine Warden Service discovered Heimann was not dead after an investigation that included a search with 15 game wardens, along with dozens of civilians, aircraft, watercraft and all-terrain vehicles. His disappearance was ruled suspicious.

Video footage from businesses over the years show Heimann walking without assistance, including after an appointment with the VA that he used a wheelchair to attend and said he was constantly wheelchair bound, according to the affidavit.

The VA has paid approximately $244,075 in disability benefits to Heimann since January 2016, according to court documents.

Heimann will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service while the criminal case progresses. The charge carries a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

No Truth Allowed in Switzerland Now

Except that is not true, say the Swiss courts. Even when the brain is gone and the flesh is stripped away by time, the subjective feelings of a man who died years ago trump biological reality

In December, Emanuel Brünisholz will begin a 10-day stint in a Swiss prison. His crime? Stating the scientific truth that skeletons cannot be transgender.

Brünisholz’s dystopian tale begins in December 2022. In response to a Facebook post by Swiss National Council member Andreas Glarner, Brünisholz, a wind-instrument repairman from Burgdorf, wrote: ‘If you dig up LGBTQI people after 200 years, you’ll only find men and women based on their skeletons. Everything else is a mental illness promoted through the curriculum.’

In August 2023, Brünisholz was interviewed by Burgdorf police, who interrogated him over the ‘intent’ of his comment. Then came a prosecutor’s letter, informing him that he had been charged with ‘hate speech’ against the relatively new category of sexual orientation in the Swiss Criminal Code. He was convicted and fined 500 Swiss Francs.

He appealed this conviction, but was unsuccessful. In December, a court reaffirmed the guilty verdict, and Brünisholz was ordered to pay an extra 600 Swiss Francs in court costs. Brünisholz, unwilling to throw more time and money at this ridiculous assault on his free speech, did not appeal further. He has since refused to pay his fines and court fees and, as a result, will go to prison.

David Strom:

I always assumed that the Swiss were more immune to absurdities than other Europeans. They are famous for their precision, or at least were. But my assumption turned out to be completely wrong.

The censorship of gender-critical speech and the accompanying assault on truth is bad enough. But the logical and linguistic contortions in the original judgement make matters even worse. In one passage, the judge wrote:

‘LGBTQI means lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, queer and intersex, and denotes therefore different sexual orientations. It’s a loose group of people who consider themselves a part of the aforementioned sexual orientations. Therefore, LGBTQI is a group of people with specific sexual orientations.’

Come again? According to this court, ‘transgender’, ‘queer’ and ‘intersex’ are sexual orientations, when clearly they are not. Lesbian, gay and bi are orientations. Intersex is a distinct condition. The rest are self-appointed identities.

Prison for saying something that should not be in the least controversial? It makes sense if your goal is to strip meaning from words and hide basic facts. Some people, like Emanuel Brünisholz, refused to be cowed by mere social opprobrium or lesser punishments. As with reality itself, some people are too stubborn to learn what is and is not Approved™ by the authorities.

Of course, Brünisholz's imprisonment will serve to elevate the ordinary person's awareness of just how far things have gone, so it may backfire. Or not. It may take a series of such cases to generate a backlash strong enough to convince the powers that be that they are going down a path their citizens don't want to travel.

Amidst all the chortles and gloating over the No Kings silliness, this cautionary note for PJ Media's Scott Pinsker, PR professional and conservative political advisor

Yes, the ‘No Kings’ Rallies Were Ridiculous. But the Democrats Still Won a Big PR Victory.

Most political protests are absolutely, 100% meaningless. They might make the protesters feel a little bit better, but nothing significant ever changes. At best, it’s a one-day blip in the news; at worst, it’s a colossal waste of time for all involved.

But there are exceptions.

The power of protests is that they galvanize public opinion, pressure politicians, promote activism, and hijack the news narrative (at least for a little while). Which means, we shouldn’t judge a protest via the legislative action it produces, because that wasn’t its fundamental purpose.

Protests are theater, not sausage-making: They’re PR plays.

It’s just showbiz, babe.

And the purpose of PR isn’t to pass legislation, but to sway public sentiment.

In the lead-up to the “No Kings” protests on Oct. 18, the Democrats faced fierce perceptual headwinds — and from multiple directions, too. First, their own base despised ‘em for committing the one unforgivable sin: They lost the popular vote to “literally Hitler.”

That’s problematic, because modern elections are increasingly won or lost on turnoutIt’s less about wooing the undecideds and more about ginning up the diehards.

But in the DNC’s eyes, there was no need to panic because American elections are binary decisions: It doesn’t matter how much you hate your own party — as long as you hate the other party more! And although President Trump has done a great deal to demotivate the left, he hasn’t converted them to his side. (Trump’s approval rating amongst liberals still hovers in the single digits.)

The Democrats are betting the farm that — when push comes to shove — all the good little leftists will still line up and vote Donkey. I mean, where else are they gonna go?! Since Trump is “literally Hitler” and must be stopped at all costs, they’re gambling all their chips on the “common enemy” not only being enough to keep their coalition together, but also motivated to vote.

And for this group, the PR message they most wanted to hear was that the DNC would fight back more effectively.Remember: They didn’t sour on the Democratic Party because they were angry about being lied to about Biden’s senility or disagreed with his policies.

They were mad because their “team” sucked, Trump won, and the 2024 election results made ‘em look stupid.

But even though moderates/undecided voters are less influential than ever before, they’re still a meaningful demographic. You need a combination of strong turnout from your base plus a sizable portion of moderates/undecideds in order to win.

Each year, millions of older voters die off, and millions of first-time voters are added to the electoral register. Political parties need an onboarding process for first-time voters, or they could lose these people for the next 70 years.

This was the strategy that worked so well for Trump in 2024: He rallied his base, won enough moderates/undecideds, and onboarded millions of first-time voters.

For moderates, their dislike for the Democratic Party had nothing to do with ‘em not fighting hard enough. Instead, it was policy-based and attitudinal: Between the Biden [feces] show, ineffective governance, COVID overreach, and trans/woke idiocy, they decided that the Dems were a bunch of out-of-touch weirdos.

…. But as bad as their image already was amongst moderates/undecideds, the Dems were on the verge of destroying it completely — by aligning themselves with political violence.

The Charlie Kirk assassination changed everything. No longer was political violence a theoretical possibility; it was now a clear and present danger to our democracy. Whereas a disappointingly large number of leftists celebrated Kirk’s murder, the rest of the country was shocked and appalled.

…. The Trump administration aggressively connected the fears, outrages, and public backlash of Kirk’s death to the virulent rhetoric of radical left voices, which was entirely fair to do: Actions have consequences, and after ten long years of calling one side “literally Hitler” and a “fascist” a million-zillion times, eventually, someone was gonna take ‘em at their word.

Which is exactly what happened when Tyler Robinson wrote “Hey fascist! Catch!” on a bullet casing.

The Democrats’ public image was in the toilet. One more act of political violence would’ve permanently branded ‘em as the party of unstable, unlikeable, anti-American sociopaths (which isn’t a great way to win moderates/undecideds).

Enter the “No Kings” rallies. Sure, we can joke about the absurdity of the event. As we discussed yesterda …. But as a PR event, it was highly successful

Although the turnout wasn’t anywhere close to the 7 million attendees that organizers claimed, it was still a lot of people. Probably there were about 5 million participants.

And for the most part, they were peaceful.

The “No Kings” protests accomplished two key things for the left: First, it signaled to their base that the Democratic Party is (finally!) ready to stand up and fight. It certainly wasn’t coincidental that the protests took place during the “Schumer Shutdown.” The messaging — and the timing — was intentional.

It gave their downtrodden base a sorely-needed shot in the arm.

Second, it signaled to moderates/undecideds that not all anti-Trump voices are violent, sociopathic, Antifa-inspired wackaloons. For the most part, everyone there behaved. For the most part, the American flags outnumbered the Palestinian, Mexican, and LGBTQ flags. For the most part, the participants understood how “political theater” works, followed their assigned script, and kept their noses clean.

And because they did, the label of “political violence” will be harder to pin on ‘em.

In the process, they did open themselves up to further lampooning: Instead of being led by young, energetic 20-somethings, the “No Kings” rallies were full of Boomers and 70-something ex-hippies. Their outfits were ridiculous and unserious. (With all due respect to The Washington Post, an inflatable frog suit is NOT the “fashion statement of the year.” It’s goofy and weird.)

But they successfully energized their base, and they put reputational distance between themselves and political violence. Not completely, of course, but progress was made. We’re fooling ourselves if we think otherwise.

And that alone made it a big PR victory.

Convenient to transportation

39 Riverside Avenue (Anthony Place) sold today for $1.995,000. The history of this 1925, worn out house is that it sold for $985,000 on December 23, 2020 to a builder who gut-renovated it and resold it to these owners on October 21, 2021. They in turn tried for $2.250 million on Se[ptember 2024, and a year-plus later, learned its market price. A very nice re-do, but you can’t change the location.

New Listing in Old Greenwich

145 Shore Road, $3.5 million. Very nice inside, but the listing’s “1938” construction date seems … dated; nothing much left from that era is evident, which may please younger buyers.

One lucky call here; the owners offered it for sale at $2.495 million in 2021 but rented it out instead for $15,000. So they collected a nice rental income for four-plus years and will now, probably sell it for a million dollars more.
