Prominent Virologist Told Intelligence Agencies COVID Likely Came From Lab, But Told Public It Didn't

David Strom, HotAir:

“You may remember the name Dr. Ralph Baric from the COVID madness years.

“He was one of the many "experts" trotted out during the pandemic to give credibility to Anthony Fauci and company, and to trash anybody who questioned The Narrative™, especially those who suggested that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“Well, unsurprisingly, that was not what he told the intelligence community when he briefed them on the origin of the virus. He made pretty clear that it didn't appear to have a zoonotic origin and likely came from the lab. And he should know—he had done some work on coronaviruses in the lab and had warned officials there that they were not using sufficient biosafety measures for their research.”

Prominent Virologist Warned Intelligence Community COVID-19 Could Have Leaked From Wuhan Lab. Then He Met With Fauci and Changed His Tune.https://t.co/0GMi41Hehh

— Washington Free Beacon (@FreeBeacon) November 4, 2025

“This information was shared with the Washington Free Beacon by a whistleblower, who shared with them the PowerPoint deck that Baric used in his intelligence briefing, which closely mirrors the one he used to brief Congress later that year.

“In fact, it was identical, but for the fact that he removed the information about the WIV and emphasized the theory that the virus came from a wet market.

A prominent U.S. virologist who collaborated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology before the COVID-19 pandemic privately informed the U.S. intelligence community in January 2020 that the Chinese lab may be responsible for the outbreak. But in his public remarks to congressional staffers one month later—and after meeting with former White House health adviser Anthony Fauci—the researcher stayed mum about the Wuhan lab and lent credence to the discredited wet market theory.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill virologist Dr. Ralph Baric warned the Office of the Director of National Intelligence during a closed-door presentation with the agency’s Biological Sciences Experts Group on or around Jan. 29, 2020, that the Wuhan lab, which was conducting risky gain-of-function experiments on bat viruses similar to the one that causes COVID-19, may have accidentally released the virus into the human population. Baric’s presentation, which the Washington Free Beacon obtained from a whistleblower, went beyond mere speculation: Considered one of the world’s foremost experts on coronaviruses, Baric experimented with coronaviruses in 2015 with the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s top researcher, Shi Zhengli. Later, in early 2024, he testified to House investigators that he had privately warned Shi that her lab lacked sufficient biosafety protections and that he always believed a lab leak origin was possible.

Strom: “Perhaps I shouldn't have put "expert" in quotation marks when it comes to COVID. After all, he really is one. I chose to do so because when he was speaking to the public during the pandemic, he didn't act as an expert, but rather as a propagandist who told the public lies for the benefit of a regime.”

I did not think US scientists would hide critical info about SARS-like virus research in Wuhan. But emails unearthed in the past 2 years suggest that a US scientist had received still unpublished coronavirus sequences from Wuhan.https://t.co/exAKX5uhur

— Alina Chan (@Ayjchan) November 6, 2025

"Experts" say what they believe to be true based on evidence and experience; propagandists say what they believe is helpful to a cause, regardless of what they believe.

Baric’s private presentation to the intelligence community in January 2020, which was first disclosed Friday by Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), was almost identical to a public briefing he delivered to the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus the following month on Feb. 26, 2020. For the public presentation, however, Baric removed the slides referencing the possibility that the virus could have leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Baric, during his private briefing, also downplayed the theory that a Wuhan wet market was responsible for the outbreak, noting that most of the first known cases of COVID-19 had no exposure to the market. He removed those slides as well and instead lent credibility to the wet market theory.

"From what I understand, bats are used in certain delicacy dishes and also used in medicinal medicines, so there’s a possibility that bat parts were in the market," Baric said during his public congressional briefing.

Rutgers University professor of chemical biology Richard Ebright, one of the most prominent academic proponents of the lab leak theory, said it was no coincidence that Baric omitted his references to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in his public presentation. Ebright said Baric held a "highly unusual one-on-one meeting" with Fauci on Feb. 11, 2020, an appointment reflected in a copy of Fauci’s schedule obtained through a Freedom of Information Act Request.

“Moreover, Baric didn't just lie about what he believed. He publicly trashed people who were saying what he believed to be true. That is Baghdad Bob-level BS, but unlike Baghdad Bob, who said stupid things as American tanks were rolling behind him, Baric was able to spout his BS without having to contradict evidence before our eyes. He could say "trust me," and people did.”

At the time, Fauci was quietly coordinating efforts to cast the lab leak theory as a baseless conspiracy. Fauci and former National Institutes of Health director Francis Collins were also warned about the Wuhan lab’s potential role in the outbreak during a Feb. 1, 2020, conference call. But instead of heeding those warnings, Collins and Fauci, who led the federal agencies that funded gain-of-function research with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, set out to cast discussions of lab origin of COVID-19 as a baseless conspiracy theory.

Collins lamented in an email exchange with Fauci the next day that discussion of a lab origin of COVID-19 "would do great potential harm to science and international harmony." And Fauci, according to the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, prompted the creation of the infamous "Proximal Origin" paper published in Nature Medicine that sought to disprove claims the pandemic originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci later cited the paper during White House press briefings to downplay the lab leak theory.

Baric did not return a request for comment.

Here's anther shutdown that seems destined to continue

Emboldened by what they see as a popular mandate, the Democrats are doubling down, and now want a guarantee that the House will rescind Trump’s spending cuts.

The link goes to a more optimistic Fox News report, but if you dig down into the article you’ll find no actual facts to support that cheery outlook; the progressives scent blood in the water, and aren’t budging. Besides, the House’s continuing spending resolution only extends to November 26th anyway, so we’ll be right back where we started in less than three weeks. I say we follow Catalina Yacht’s example and just close permanently.

Speaking of "Trust Issues" ...

would you like that straight up, or on the rocks?

Catalina Yachts has ceased production due to short-term financial challenges following its purchase by Daedalus Yachts founder Michael Reardon in May 2025. The company cited "short-term financial challenges" as the cause for a temporary production pause, but internal reports from employees point to deeper issues such as unpaid wages, suspended health insurance, and a lack of supplies, leading to an eviction from the manufacturing facility.

  • Production halt:

Catalina Yachts announced a temporary pause in production in October 2025, citing financial difficulties.

  • Company acquisition:

In May 2025, Michael Reardon of Daedalus Yachts purchased Catalina Yachts.

  • Internal issues:

Employee testimonials indicate significant problems under the new ownership, including unpaid salaries, suspended health insurance, and work stoppages.

  • Eviction:

Reardon was evicted from the Largo, Florida, factory in October 2025 for not making rent payments, according to a lawsuit filed in a Florida court.

  • Future uncertainty:

The company has stated its intention to resume building boats in the future, but the situation remains uncertain due to the financial and operational issues.

“Short-term financial problems”. Uh huh.

The owner also has Tartan, Freedom and other brands in his portfolio, so good luck with those, too. What usually happens in these cases is that buyers waiting for their boats discover that their hefty deposits were spent finishing other yachts ahead of them, and there’s no money left to build theirs. Or, for that matter, to finish the boats that were still in production. Bummer.

Back in May, Cruising World took a break from covering the NBA and published this bit of “objective reporting”:

In a move that signals both continuity and transformation in American yacht manufacturing, Catalina Yachts and its sister company, True North Yachts, have been acquired by Michael Reardon, founder and CEO of Daedalus Yachts. The acquisition, announced April 30, marks a significant new chapter for two of the most respected names in U.S. boatbuilding.

With more than five decades of heritage and hundreds of thousands of boats on the water, Catalina Yachts has long been synonymous with quality, performance, and integrity. Now, with Reardon at the helm, the storied brand—and the Downeast-style True North powerboat line—are poised to evolve under a new but deeply aligned vision.

“For over 50 years, Catalina has stood for accessible, well-built boats that deliver real sailing pleasure,” said Patrick Turner, Catalina’s longtime president. “Michael Reardon shares those values, and we’re confident he’ll carry them forward while positioning the brand for the future.”

Reardon, who launched Daedalus Yachts with a focus on sustainable, performance-driven sailing craft, brings a modern sensibility rooted in innovation and environmental responsibility. His acquisition of Catalina and True North reflects a commitment not just to legacy, but to growth—through design, manufacturing, and investment in people.

“We’re not just preserving the legacy—we’re building upon it,” said Reardon. “Catalina and True North are iconic American brands. I’m honored to lead them into the next era of growth and innovation.”

Both companies will continue operations from their current base in Largo, Florida, and Reardon has pledged to retain the existing workforce and dealer network, while investing in new model development across both lines.

The transition also carries a strong emotional note. Jean Butler, wife of late Catalina founder Frank Butler, voiced her confidence in the new direction. “Frank believed in building boats that brought families together and gave people joy on the water,” she said. “I believe Michael Reardon understands that spirit. Frank would be proud to see Catalina and True North in the hands of someone who values the people, the product, and the passion that built this company.”

For current owners, dealers, and sailors across the country, the message is one of stability and optimism. There will be no immediate disruptions in support or service, and Reardon’s track record suggests a fresh round of energy and ideas could soon shape the future of both brands.

Founded in 1969, Catalina remains one of the largest sailboat manufacturers in the U.S., with a focus on building high-quality boats that strike a balance between cruising comfort and responsive sailing. True North Yachts, known for their classic Downeast aesthetics and offshore-capable hulls, has expanded Catalina’s reach into the powerboat market with a similarly hands-on approach to design and build quality.

Daedalus Yachts, meanwhile, has carved a niche in high-performance, eco-conscious sailing, and Reardon’s leadership there has been marked by bold design choices and a commitment to sustainability.

The coming months will likely reveal how these three brands—each with its own DNA—will integrate and influence one another. But one thing is certain: American boatbuilding has a fresh breeze on the beam.

The rag was still serving as the defunct company’s mouthpiece as recently as October 20 when, sounding exactly like Spinal Tap’s PR guy, it hailed the soon-to-be permanent shutdown “production pause” as one that would “ensure the company’s stability going forward”. Jesus.

The Maine Wire offers more honest reporting from a local perspective, although Catalina was a national brand, and you’d certainly find them up and down Long Island Sound and all around the country. :

Maine Sailing, Fishing Community Rocked By Catalina Yacht and Powerboat Company Going Out Of Business

The sudden shutdown of Catalina Yachts has hundreds of Cat owners across Maine dumbfounded – and worried.

The sailboat manufacturer – once considered the largest such business in the world – announced last week it was closing “temporarily” amid a boardroom battle.

Florida Catalina President Patrick Turner announced the main factory was going dark til further notice.

The shutdown comes amid a company reorganization following its purchase by renowned yacht dealer Michael Reardon, who allegedly has reneged on the sale.

Reardon had also promised to buy Catalina’s sister company, True North Powerboats, known for their Downeast-style vessels – favorites of fishermen and recreationists.

But the business deal is now apparently becalmed, throwing into uncertainty for Maine boaters and fishermen Reardon’s corporate future.

A Florida court last week evicted Reardon from Catalina’s manufacturing plant.

The company’s sailboats are a staple among recreational sailors nationwide, the most common boats plying the Maine coast and the state’s inland waters.

…. A key question among Cat owners is whether they will be able to maintain their boats since parts will be hard if not impossible to get.

Turner insisted that “pending orders” will be honored, but boaters are leery – and fear new orders will be spiked.

“I’m absolutely shocked that we aren’t talking more about this major announcement,” Ken Bauer of Catalina Sailboat Owners Association said Saturday.

In his statement Saturday, Turner tried to downplay the alleged bleak outlook.

“All existing boat orders remain in place and will be fulfilled,” he said. “Our dealer network remains available to assist with sales, service, and warranty matters.”

…. Reardon, founder of Daedalus Yachts of North Carolina, acquired Catalina six months ago.

He also acquired sister company True North in the same deal, as well as Tartan Yachts, Freedom Yachts and AMP Carbon Spars, making him America’s largest recreational yacht builder.

Two-thirds of Americans are chumps, according to this survey

the sage of omaha has previously offered advice on this topic

For the second time in as many seasons, a major betting saga has impacted the NBA community, as Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier were among 34 people arrested two weeks ago following a federal investigation into alleged corrupt poker games and sports betting plots.

Last season, Jontay Porter was permanently banned from the NBA for disclosing inside information to sports bettors, and with FBI Director Kash Patel claiming more arrests are expected as the investigation continues, a sizeable chunk of Americans have concerns about the league's integrity.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday, more than a third of Americans believe that NBA players and coaches are involved in illegal activities to influence betting on NBA games either very often or somewhat often. This belief spills over into how Americans feel about the integrity of the NBA, with 48 percent of respondents to the Quinnipiac Poll lacking confidence that the league's games are played fairly.

"Perception is important, and right now the NBA clearly has a perception problem," Nick Pietruszkiewicz, Assistant Professor of Journalism at Quinnipiac, said. "It might, too, have a trust problem."

Professional sports have a gambling problem, Professor Pietruszkiewicz, not just ‘trust issues.”

It started with land acknowledgements; now you can't sell or mortgage your property in British Columbia

First Nations' Land Grabs Get Bigger, Bolder and Now Aiming at Pipelines, Too

Beege Welborn, HotAir:

Oh, those feisty tribes!

Whatever will they think to say 'MINE, MINE, MINE!' about next?

Strangely enough, I have that answer, but you knew that.

Quick refresher:

A British Columbia Supreme Court judge, back in August, decided that Aboriginal title trumps, like, your mortgage and tax bill after a five-year hearing, leaving it to everyone else to straighten out the mess she just created. The indigenous Cowichan tribal council decided to lay claim to a lovely stretch of the Fraser River in downtown Richmond, B.C., where their ancestors had fished on and off in camps for centuries but never actually, like, lived. The mayor of Richmond upsets everyone because he makes sure every single property owner in town knows that the Indians now claim their lands, which no one had bothered to tell them before, or that they were even in danger of possibly losing title to this tribe out of nowhere.

Now, if you want to sell your property or make improvements, you have to get a blessing from the Cowichans, even though this is still in the appeals stage. But you won't be able to sell it because of the Cowichans - no one wants to deal with a tribe owning property. Banks are also canceling previously approved commercial loans based on the tribal court victory because no one wants to deal with a tribal council.

…. The city of North Vancouver, B.C. has just sent letters to its residents, warning them that their land titles may well be in jeopardy. Thanks to the inspiring victory of the Cowichans, there are - count 'em - three tribes laying claim to 'unceded property' within the township borders. It turns out, once everyone got spooked enough to look, that 95% of the land in British Columbia falls under the requisite parameters for Aboriginal title claims by whatever tribes get there first to plant their fishing spears and feathers.

95% of the land in BC is under Aboriginal title claim. The principles set out in the Cowichan case say that once Aboriginal title is established, it trumps the fee simple title granted to landowners. BC residents may soon no longer own their homes and businesses. https://t.co/Krk6Qgk1Rh pic.twitter.com/xaSglBTPdb

— Keith Wilson, K.C. (@ikwilson) November 6, 2025

Not to be left out, tribes already have announced dibs on land in Western Quebec, too, although the French may not roll as easily as the B.C. bunch.

The only holdouts from the land grabs so far appear to be the Albertans, who assert they are immune to claims as their land was  'ceded or surrendered'  by the tribes, not negotiated through treaties, as the other territories that are now facing these claims.

In today's news, I guess the theme is 'go big or go home.'

The Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc Nation (say that five times fast) and allied bands filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court asserting Indigenous title to almost half a million acres, which includes the entire town of Kamloops, B.C., a resort, and some other good stuff.

Ostensibly, it was a defensive move to stop the expansion of a gold mine or something, but come on, now - I didn't fall off the cabbage truck yesterday.

That's bad enough, right?

When I told you B.C. Premier David Eby was an uber-woke weasel, I meant it.

Here he is yesterday, with his First Nations buddies - the ones his land acknowledgments have helped start turning over his province to - signing an agreement with the tribes not to allow Alberta oil and fossil fuel products to pass in pipelines through their province to ports on the coast for export.

And yet another Chinese government spy

Military secrets this time

Fiber Laser Expert Convicted by Federal Jury of Espionage and Theft of Trade Secrets

A federal jury has convicted Ji Wang, 63, of Painted Post, N.Y., of two counts of economic espionage, one count of theft of trade secrets, one count of attempted economic espionage, and one count of attempted theft of trade secrets.

Around July 1, 2016, Wang stole hundreds of files that contained non-public data generated during the DARPA project, including trade-secret manufacturing technology that would have enabled him to fabricate all manner of specialty optical fibers, including for fiber lasers.

…. Wang was born in China and immigrated to the United States in 1998 to work for Corning Incorporated.  Between 2002 and 2007, Wang was assigned to work on a joint research and development project funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Corning.  The goal of the 5-year, $11.4 million project was to develop optical fibers for high-powered lasers with military and commercial applications.  DARPA and Corning aimed to increase the power of fiber lasers by more than a factor of 1000.  DARPA sought to develop this technology to create laser weapons capable of shooting down drones and missiles.

…. Ten days before Wang stole the trade secret files, he had applied for China’s Thousand Talents Plan Award. The Thousand Talents Plan Award was an initiative by the Chinese government aimed at China-born residents who immigrated to the United States to study or work in science and technology fields. The Thousand Talents Plan Award incentivized these people to return to China by promising millions of dollars of investment to award recipients who returned to China.  Two months after Wang stole the trade secret files, he was selected to receive a Thousand Talents Plan Award.

Wang was negotiating with Chinese government entities to start a specialty fiber business in China from at least 2014 through 2017. Wang sought to receive tens of millions of dollars in investment from Chinese government entities, who would have been shareholders in his new venture. Wang planned to use the stolen trade-secret files to start this business in China.

Wang’s business plans also touted the military applications of the technology. In one such business plan, which Wang submitted to a Chinese government entity, he advertised that specialty fibers “can also be installed on military vehicles,” including “tanks.” Wang claimed that such use of the technology on military vehicles could “be key to deciding victory or defeat.”  Ultimately, law enforcement disrupted Wang’s efforts before he was able to start a new business and exploit the technology he stole.

The Chinese have been doing this for decades. Way back in the early 1990s, a Riverside resident had built an international rare earths business, buying rare earths from China and reselling them to various manufacturers around the world. He hired an assistant, a Chinese woman who, unbeknownst to him, was the daughter of a general high up in the communist power structure, to help him in his purchases from China. One morning in 1995 he came to work and discovered that the woman had disappeared, taking with her copies of my friend/client’s sourcing and customer information and wiping out the computers in the office.

Shortly thereafter, customers starting calling: they’d all received identical telexes from the woman, acting as head of a new Chinese government-sponsored entity, informing them that the shipments already in transit would be turned around at sea and delivered to new customers, and no further shipments would be made, unless the customers tore up their contracts with the U.S. company and signed new ones with the Chinese. As the manufacturers/customers were faced with either shutting down their factories or meeting the Chinese government’s demands, they apologized to my friend, and then complied. He was ruined, and within a month he’d laid off all his employees and closed the business permanently.

That’s a true story: I was there. And it was just a small taste of what was to come.

Feds raid a Tren de Aragua gang stash house across the street from an elementary school, seize guns, drugs and criminals; guess what the pols are upset about?

Spoiler alert: not the presence of the stash house next to a school

The high-risk operation began at approximately 6:00 am on October 24. Federal agents with the US Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) breached the apartment unit upon the execution of a federal arrest warrant, resulting in the apprehension of Roberth Jose Hernandez Garcia, a Venezuelan Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang member who was caught selling illicit drugs, firearms, and ammunition during several undercover DEA operations spanning between September and October in the Portland area, court records show. Seven additional subjects, all of whom are Venezuelan nationals with suspected TdA affiliation and have criminal records, were also taken into custody at the apartment complex.

According to federal investigators, the Tren de Aragua gang members are believed to have arrived in Portland just over a month ago after fleeing Chicago due to increased immigration enforcement operations. The city of Portland, like Chicago, is a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.

Oregon Lawmaker Tries to Disrupt ICE Arresting Cartel Members at 'Stash House' Near Elementary School

Oregon State Representative Ricki Ruiz allegedly attempted to disrupt the law enforcement operation to arrest the suspects who had been using the apartment unit as a "stash house" to harbor illegal drugs, firearms, and ammunition, all of which were intended for sale in the Portland area, according to federal investigators, as The Post Millennial reported exclusively.

Rep. Ruiz took to social media to not only slam the October 24 ICE operation, but also to promote a hotline for the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition (PIRC), which rallies left-wing activists to interfere with federal immigration enforcement actions.

Here’s what he posted on Here’s what he posted on Facebook

We can confirm that there was a heavy ICE operation across from Rockwood Preparatory School, in the nearby apartment complex and surrounding area. The school had to close for the day due to the operation. While we cannot confirm if the helicopters were part of the same activity, we understand why many residents are concerned and have reported noise disturbances.

Witnesses reported over 10 vehicles arriving and targeting two individuals. Unfortunately, we expect to see more of these operations in the coming weeks. It’s important to remember that everyone still has rights — no matter what.

Please save these numbers:

PIRC Hotline: 1-888-622-1510 — to report ICE activity

ECO: 1-888-274-7292 — for legal help and guidance

These are not normal times. When a school in the heart of Rockwood has to cancel classes without notice and a community is left in crisis, it’s clear that these tactics are meant to create fear in one of our most diverse and vulnerable neighborhoods. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with our partners to ensure our community stays informed and protected.

And this being Oregon, here’s the top comment:

Now, Democrats DEMAND that Trump force the Disney Channel to air Monday Night Football on You Tube

UPDATE

Good Lord, even Washington Post editors see the cheap politicking Fauxcahontas is engaged in:

The Washington Post editorial board pushed back on Warren's argument and wrote, "That is not, in fact, what’s happening here." The editorial was headlined, "Elizabeth Warren knows better."

YouTube TV said in a post on X on Oct. 30 that, despite its "best efforts," it was not able to reach a fair deal with Disney by Thursday's deadline, meaning customers would no longer be able to access Disney-owned channels and content, including college and pro sports.

One of the issues at the center of the dispute was the fees Disney sought from YouTube TV to carry its channels.

"This is not an area that would be improved by the involvement of the government. Yet Warren complained on social media that President Donald Trump has 'let them get away with it,'" the Post editors wrote. "Get away with what? YouTube TV is trying to keep costs down for its customers, while Disney is trying to get the most value for its products. Buyers want prices to be lower, and sellers want prices to be higher. Such is life."

The Washington Post argued that Warren was effectively taking Disney's side in the fight and added, "Why should the president or a senator weigh in on Disney’s side, which is the side of higher prices for consumers? It certainly doesn’t make life more affordable for anyone, except maybe Disney investors."

The editorial board concluded that Disney and Google could resolve the matter without government interference.

"Warren, a former Harvard Law School professor who made big money consulting for corporations before she refashioned herself as a pitchfork populist, knows all this. Maybe she just thinks her supporters are not as smart as her," the paper wrote.
