What do you call the person who graduated last in his class at medical school? Doctor.

How the hell should I know what you got?

How the hell should I know what you got?

UConn Medical School moves closer to pass/fail grading system; suspends, considering permanently banning honor society because grades are racist.

Leaders of many elite institutions now say that a merit-based admissions policy may lead to unacceptable racially unequal outcomes. The New York Times, for example, recently published an op-ed arguing for ending blind auditions in America's orchestras. Such moves indicate an overturning of decades of consensus that neutral meritocratic standards foster racial diversity and signal an institutional shift towards explicit racial quotas.

In their letter, the signatories indicate that they believe that "implicit bias in grading and assessment of students" may be behind the racial disparity in Alpha Omega Alpha membership. This, they write, "makes it necessary for us to seriously re-examine the pathway forward."

UPDATE: Some commenters have questioned why I used a photograph of a black model dressed as a doctor to illustrate this post. Of course, it was to illustrate the point: when the Great White Fathers of Diversity call for the elimination of objective testing and grades because they cause “racial disparity” they don’t mean there are too few whites succeeding, they mean too many blacks are failing. Implicit in that advocacy is the belief that “minorities” (for purposes of tabulating race-based results in these matters, Asians, Semites — Jews and Arabs alike — and East Asians, are counted as white) aren’t capable of scoring well on tests. I don’t believe that, they do. They won’t say it, so I chose to say it for them, put a face to their racism, and let them deny it. So far, all I’ve heard is spluttering.

Another claim that black people can't measure up

Tell it to these musicians. Or see, “Famous African-American Horn Players”

Tell it to these musicians. Or see, “Famous African-American Horn Players”

To Make Orchestras More Diverse, End Blind Auditions (the article is from the NYT, the link leads around the paywall)

This is different from yesterday’s demand by college basketball coaches for the elimination of SAT requirements for their black recruits (all recruits, ostensibly, but since they based their position on a claim that the tests are racist, it’s a fair inference that they mean blacks are the ones who are being denied admission). No one cares whether a star forward is even literate, let alone capable of maintaining a passing GPA during his one year on campus: it’s his ability to play basketball and keep the seats filled that counts, and SAT scores are irrelevant.

But it’s precisely the talent of a musician that’s tested by blind auditions, and it was only when they were implemented by orchestras that Asians and women of all races came to dominate the ranks of performers. To insist on lumping blacks into a specific racial class and demand that they be hired by number rather than individual accomplishment is to, as Jonathan Chiat points out, “collapse all identity into racial categories” to deny them their right to be judged and treated as individuals.

Earlier this week we were told by no less an authority than the Smithsonian Institution that concepts like hard work, deferred gratification, and scientific, linear thinking are hallmarks of “whiteness” and other races should be free to pursue, what? Laziness and irrational thought? Denial of the “white” belief in cause and effect? I doubt Asians would agree, and if I were black I’d be furious at this patronizing (many of the “experts” describing the pitiful capabilities of blacks are white “race counselors” ), demeaning theory.

It’s almost impossible these days to distiguish between the most racist southern Democrat and his liberal counterpart in the rest of the country. That can’t be good.

Were there no social workers available? No violence interrupters?

In Indiana, a legally armed drive shoots, kills gunman, stopping shooting spree

As Hayes was chasing the second cemetery worker, one of his bullets whizzed into the vehicle of an unidentified good Samaritan who was stopped at a red light near the intersection, injuring him, the Indianapolis Star reported.

That man stepped out of the car, returned fire with a legal weapon and fatally struck Hayes.

“This tragic event could have been much more disastrous,” Brownsburg Police Capt. Jennifer Barrett told WISH. “Victim three not only saved victim two’s life, but he saved potentially the lives of many others. Victim three did exactly what anybody would have wanted him to do at that scene that day.”

Yesterday Mayor de Blasio introduced his solution to the soaring murder rate in Fun City. But:

Ife Charles, a violence interrupter with the SOS Bed Stuy program, appeared at the mayor’s Wednesday press briefing to explain the work she does and how she plans to address the shootings that have left her neighborhood reeling.

“Part of this work, people have this notion that it happens immediately. It does not,” she said Wednesday, as the mayor looked on.

Charles then used the example of a woman who now works with her as taking “years” to reach.

“She’s actually working with us,” she said. “But it took years of us having conversations and her doing trial and error.”

The fellow whose life was saved in Indiana is probably thankful that de Blasio isn’t in charge out there, and even in New York, some of the mayor’s critics remain skeptical:

The mayor’s approach — one where he highlights violence interrupters and seems to downplay the NYPD — is one that criminal justice experts are now starting to notice — and question.

Maki Haberfeld, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said that while there are merits to the methods used by violence interrupters — also know as the Cure Violence movement — the mayor is making a mistake in placing so much emphasis on them in the wake of recent shootings.

“I have never seen such an uninformed and uneducated approach than I’ve seen in the last four months from him,” she said. “To come up with this soft approach during this spike in violence, this is not the time. A soft approach is once you mitigate the problem, and then you try to prevent it in the future.”

Methods used by violence interrupters include mediating disputes between gang members before they turn violent, offering mental health services and pointing at-risk people to long- and short-term job opportunities. [emphasis added-ed]

Haberfeld said while those methods can be effective, overemphasizing them sends the wrong message to police, criminals and to the public, including the families of victims mourning the loss of a loved one.

“He’s just oblivious to what’s happening. People who make tons of money selling drugs — they’re not going to be dissuaded by you talking softly to them,” she said. “I don’t think — I know. This is my profession. I know based on research I’ve been doing for the past 30 years.”

WHEN RACISM IS SYSTEMIC, EVERYTHING IS RACIST

That hurts!

That hurts!

SEATTLE WOMAN FORCED TO APOLOGIZE FOR “THE PAIN” SHE CAUSED BY WEARING HAIR IN THE MINOAN STYLE AND OFFENDING PEOPLE WHO’VE BEEN DEAD SINCE 2,500 BC

This being Seattle, when confronted by the Twitter crowd the woman immediately recanted and begged the Inquisition to forgive her:

As reported by The Daily Wire, Rachel Marshall — founder of Seattle-based Rachel’s Ginger Beer — Instagrammed a mea culpa for her cultural-appropriated dreadlocks.

“Hello everyone, its Rachel: I have come to understand — far too belatedly — that my hairstyle is harmful.”

“It is clear that I have been stubbornly resistant, and I sincerely apologize to those I hurt. I am deeply sorry for the pain I caused to members of the African-American community, who have been and still are discriminated against & mistreated for having dreadlocks, and I’m so sorry that it took so long to admit and address my mistake. I have an appointment to remove my dreadlocks, and more broadly, am committed to earnestly listening to and learn from the voices and lived-experiences different from my own. I never want to cause any harm.”

To get her life straight, she’s gonna consult with people:

“Going forward, I will work in consultation with diversity and equity representatives to ensure my companies’ policies, practices and actions align with our intention to maintain a fair, equitable and enjoyable workplace for everyone. I commit to doing better, as an individual and with my companies, and to being more responsive to feedback in the future. I thank the people who have taken the time to express their concerns and help me learn.”

Who are these people with nothing to do in their pathetic lives? Here’s one — IG handle CultivatePropagate:

“Seattle, we gotta talk. @rachelrgb owns @rgbsoda here in Seattle with multiple locations. She is a white woman with dreadlocks and allegedly gives her product to cops (the people brutalizing her customer base) for free. It has always confused me that we have seen this woman speak at @cherrybombe and cozy up regularly with @lindaderschang (owner of multiple restaurants here in Seattle) and no one has confronted her about how her choice to willfully appropriate Black hairstyling is highly problematic.”

And if you’re wondering about the history of dreadlocks, here’s TDWwith the goods:

“Dating as far back as 2500 B.C., The Vedas, Hinduism’s oldest scriptures, depict the Hindu God Shiva wearing locs or ‘jaTaa’ in the Sanskrit language, according to Dr. Bert Ashe’s book, Twisted: My Dreadlocks Chronicles,” Ebony.com noted, adding, “‘Dreadlocks can be traced to just about every civilization in history,’ says Chimere Faulk, an Atlanta-based natural hair stylist and owner of Dr. Locs. ‘No matter the race, you will find a connection to having dreadlocks for spiritual reasons.’”

(A lengthy history of dreadlocks can be found on Wikipedia.)

This false claim to ownership of a hairstyle has been around for decades and has been debunked for just as long, but it keeps recurring because (a) social justice warriors, white and black, are historical illiterates, and (b) bullying feels virtuous, superior, and fun.

Looks like a million bucks — ten of them, in fact

mooreland.jpg

Having failed to sell at $11.5 million in 2016-2017, 59 Mooreland Road is back on the market today at $9.250 and I confess that although I don’t share the owner’s taste in interior decorating, this place is impressive: it actually looks like what a ten-million-dollar house should look like. A lot of houses in this range could be easily confused with their lesser kin in the $4-$6 range, but not this one.

Also, though the pictures don’t quite show it, the house is set waaay back from the road, high atop the hill, and it’s an impressive sight even before the peons knuckle the forehead and begin their climb to the service entrance.

Again, not the house for me, but if I had a limited budget of just ten-million and wanted a house to awe, say, investors in my latest Ponzi scheme, this is where I’d start.

End the charade

Cruel and unnecessary punishment

Cruel and unnecessary punishment

College basketball coaches want to end SAT requirement for their black one-year visiting athletes. And why not? The farce that pretends these ill-tempered children are there to get an education should have ended decades ago. Big college programs offer a one-year finishing school for kids who have no academic skills but can bounce a ball; the schools get rich, the coaches get even richer, the kids get squat and the NBA gets a minor league system, gratis. What does the SAT have to do with any of that?

But do remind me of the reason these entertainment programs aren’t taxed like any other for-profit business.

What a difference a flu makes

meadowcroft.jpg

29 Meadowcroft Lane, 5.86 vacant acres, sold in March 2019 for $4.606 million, after starting at $8.9 million 1,004 days before.

The new buyers changed their mind and put the land back up for sale 19 days ago at $5.495 million and it’s already pending. $900,000 appreciation in a year; nice work if you can get it.

It does come with architectural designs for a house, but would you really put that house on this land after paying $5.5?
