The GMLS office is closed today for a federal holiday “Juneteenth” which, so far as I can tell, is a celebration of the day that Africans who’d been captured and enslaved by their fellow Africans and thence shipped in irons to this country were freed by the executive order of a white man. I imagine there will be various ceremonies held around the country thanking President Lincoln and the white soldiers who fought and died to free those Africans, but I haven’t heard of any so far.
