Update on yesterday's post about the 12-year-old bystander shot in the South Bronx

I’ll go out on a limb here and predict that the facts will show that the fight was between gang members, not one of whom was permitted by New York’s strict gun control law to be in possession of a gun, and thus subject to that law’s mandatory minimum sentence of 3.5 years, with a maximum of 15 years. I’ll go further, and predict that at least one of the shooters has been arrested for illegal possession of a gun before, and didn’t serve that “minimum” sentence.

Career criminal remanded on slew of charges for allegedly gunning down innocent 12-year-old son of retired cop

William Ferrer, 45, was arraigned Sunday night on murder, assault, and weapons charges after police said he started blasting during a fight in the South Bronx on Saturday afternoon, killing 12-year-old Jacob Freytes and wounding two others.
Freytes, the son of a retired Finest, was “struck in the chest” by a stray bullet during the shooting, and died later at a Bronx hospital, according to the criminal complaint.
…. Ferrer has a lengthy rap sheet, with half a dozen previous arrests, including drug possession in 2013, marijuana possession in 2009, drunk-driving in 2009, and possession of stolen property in The Bronx in 2004, police sources told The Post.
He was first arrested at least as far back as 1999 [for possession of a forced [forged, probably —Ed] instrument, before being arrested again in 2001 separately for alleged menacing and criminal contempt, sources said.

Mr. Ferrer seems a bit old to be a (still-active) member of a gang, but the essential point: enforce existing gun laws, rather than enact new ones that merely affect legal gun owners, remains valid. Since at least 1999 [when he would have been 18 - Ed] Ferrer’s criminal record should have barred him from possessing a weapon, yet he was still carrying 27 years later, after many more convictions. Liberals’ “compassion” for criminals has just seen another innocent black youth’s life taken.
